2025 NBA Playoffs: Thunder Cruise, Warriors Dig Deep, Lakers on the Ropes
The Western Conference has turned into a battleground in the opening round of the 2025 NBA Playoffs. From blowout sweeps to nail-biting buzzer-beaters, the drama has been relentless. Here's a full breakdown of where things stand—and what's coming next.
Thunder Sweep Grizzlies with Ruthless Efficiency
The Oklahoma City Thunder became the first Western team to move on to the second round, handling the Memphis Grizzlies with a commanding 4-0 sweep.
Star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was unstoppable in Game 4, dropping 38 points and cementing his MVP case. Memphis, missing Ja Morant and lacking composure, couldn’t keep pace. The Grizzlies committed 22 turnovers, and OKC capitalized, scoring 32 points off those mistakes.
Now, the Thunder sit back and recover, waiting to see who survives the grueling Nuggets-Clippers clash. That rest could be a huge advantage.
Warriors Pull Ahead Behind Butler, Podziemski
The Golden State Warriors have taken a 3-1 lead over the Houston Rockets after a gritty 109-106 victory in Game 4. Veteran leadership once again proved its worth, even as Stephen Curry played a quieter game and Draymond Green struggled with foul trouble.
Jimmy Butler III, nursing a minor injury, came alive in the fourth quarter with 14 of his 27 points. Rookie Brandin Podziemski was brilliant too, notching 26 points in a breakout playoff performance.
Houston had chances to win. Alperen Sengun led with 31 points and 10 boards, while Fred VanVleet drained eight threes. But the Rockets missed 12 free throws—costly errors in a tight postseason matchup.
Golden State heads to Houston for Game 5 with a chance to close out the series.
Lakers in Trouble After Another Collapse
For the Los Angeles Lakers, Game 4 was a nightmare rerun. After holding a late lead, they fell again—this time 116-113 to the Minnesota Timberwolves—dropping them to a 3-1 deficit.
Anthony Edwards exploded for 43 points and was unguardable down the stretch. LeBron James filled the stat sheet with 27 points, 12 rebounds, 8 assists, 3 steals, and 3 blocks, but even his heroic effort wasn’t enough.
Rui Hachimura and Austin Reaves chipped in 23 and 17 points respectively, but turnovers were fatal. A critical late mistake came when LeBron’s inbound pass to Luka Doncic—who had 38 points—was picked off, sealing the Lakers’ fate.
Now, with their backs against the wall, the Lakers return to L.A. for Game 5, needing everything they’ve got to avoid elimination.
Nuggets-Clippers: A Series of Extremes
The most unpredictable series in the West might be Denver vs. L.A. Game 4 had it all—momentum swings, highlight plays, and a dramatic finish.
The Nuggets nearly blew a 20-point lead but escaped with a 101-99 win thanks to Aaron Gordon, who converted a buzzer-beating putback after a Nikola Jokic airball.
Jokic was dominant once again with 36 points and 21 rebounds. He let his teammates shine early before taking over in the third quarter. Denver’s defense clamped down late, forcing poor shots and keeping Kawhi Leonard and James Harden in check.
The Clippers, who shot lights out in Game 3, went cold from deep—just 10-for-30. It’s now a 2-2 deadlock with Game 5 back in Denver.
Western Conference Watchlist: What Comes Next?
With the first round heating up, here are the key storylines to follow in the West:
Can OKC Stay Sharp? Rest is great, but will the Thunder lose rhythm?
Will Golden State Finish the Job? One more win and the veteran squad gets extra days off.
Is There Fight Left in the Lakers? LeBron has done all he can. Who else will step up?
Which Version of Denver and L.A. Will Show Up? Both have looked elite—and shaky—at different points.
The first round may be winding down, but the intensity is only going up. Buckle up—more wild turns are coming.
